Caterpillar Class Autumn Term
Hello and a warm welcome back to school to all parents! I hope you all had a fantastic Summer Holiday!
We have some returning and some new children joining us in the Caterpillar Class this year!
The teaching assistants working alongside me in class are: Melissa, Jade and Linda.
Our whole school theme for this term is ‘Food, Glorious Food’.
Literacy- our class story is a traditional tale ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We will be learning the story chants and sequence and will be taking part in lots of exciting practical multi-sensory activities linked to the story to support our speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. These will include visits to local bakery’s and supermarkets to explore food and learn how breads are made. Some children will also participate in group activities for phonics, reading. Communication and speech and language will be supported by school Speech and language therapist.
Maths- This terms focus for maths lessons will be on number and counting and measurement. In addition to this we will have Maths based continuous provision available on a daily basis. Also functional use of maths will be part of everyday routine activities such as snack time. During the second half term we plan to have a role lay bakers shop with buying and selling using real money.
Understanding the world:
Science-We will have weekly cooking lessons where we will engaging our five senses to explore the changes that take place when ingredients are heated and combined. We will be baking, decorating and tasting ‘gingerbread people’ and other yummy biscuits and deserts.
Geography- We plan to bake deserts traditional to six different countries: Germany, England, Latvia, France, Italy and America. As part of our cooking lesson we will learn about each country through exploration of music, movement and media.
Art- We will be using real food to create mosaic food portrait art inspired by the artist Jason Mercier.
RE- Religious festivals: Harvest, Diwali, Sukkot, Hannukah and Christmas. These will be explored in the hall through multi-sensory, multimedia themed lessons and whole school assemblies.
Music – We are looking forward to exploring musical instruments and using different materials to make sound shakers and toys as part of our continuous provision. We will also be learning new songs and joining in with some familiar favourites.
PHSE – We will focus on coping with change, making friends and turn taking. These key skills will be part of all activities and will be a particular focus during weekly Forest school lesson and class super star assembly. We will have a termly focussed value. This term is ‘Friendship’.
PE: Includes sensory circuit (supported by school occupational therapist) on Mondays and dance on Thursdays (We provide PE kit in school).
We plan to go out on the mini bus on weekly basis to visit café’s, playgrounds, parks and woodlands, shops and a library in the local community. Please let me know if there are any particular places that your child experiences difficulties going to and I will try to support this by including the place to out visits.
Note: We have lots of messy play and getting outdoors to learn and play so please provide a set of spare clothes and an extra pair of outdoor footwear for your child.
